Journey to Beaumarisical

by Danny Forward

A couple of years ago at The Talbots (Beaumaris Theatre’s annual celebration of the year that has been), I may have mentioned to a committee member that I would like to do a concert of my original music one day. Be careful what you wish for. I was consequently approached (and honoured) to do just that as part of the theatre’s 70th anniversary celebrations this year. Not only did this sound like a lot of work (I still write dots on manuscripts in pencil, not use technological wizardry such as "Sibelius", to document my compositions if required to), but it seemed more than a little self-indulgent. My counter-proposal was a celebration of the last 20 years of music at Beaumaris Theatre when it conveniently staged its first major musical productions in 2003. Gratefully, my compromise was accepted and I reluctantly agreed to take on the rather obscure and grand title of “Artistic Director”.

My next step was assembling the dream creative, design and technical teams to realise my vision. All my first choices were accepted. Working with my old comrades Debbie, Rhonda and Camilla has been as much an easy joy as it ever was. The design and technical teams have been outstanding and always accommodating. Their experience and expert advice has truly helped me realise my vision. The cast, old and new friends, are exceptional talents and often baffle me with their brilliance.

My personal involvement with Beauy extends back almost 20 years. I’m pleased and proud that, apart from BUGSY MALONE and RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET (both before my time), I have either been part of the production team or seen every show represented in this production.

I will always be indebted to Beauy for this chance, the amazing opportunities it provided me over the next two decades, and the new friends and family it afforded me.

I hope you come and see BEAUMARISICAL, whether for personal nostalgic reasons or if you just like a good showtune!
