In The Spotlight with Ella Creaton

Ella Creaton’s creative genius has been a vital part of many Beaumaris Theatre productions over the last couple of years. She designs show posters, created magical elements for Puffs, was the scenic artist for The Three Musketeers, Little Miss Sunshine, The Bridges of Madison County and Steel Magnolias and Props Coordinator for The Bridges of Madison County and so, so much more!

We asked Ella to step under the spotlight to get to know her better.

What was your first role in the theatre? (on stage or off)

My very first on-stage role in theatre was in my last year of primary school when I played the Dodo Bird in Alice in Wonderland Jr. Unfortunately, I cannot sing, dance or act, so that was the beginning and end of my musical career. Regardless, I had a lot of fun and I have really great memories of it.

These days, I remain firmly behind the scenes (probably for the best). My first role at Beaumaris Theatre was Light and Sound Operation for The Vicar of Dibley in 2022. I had never done anything like it before, so I was a bit nervous. Luckily for me, everyone at Beaumaris is so lovely and welcoming and I’m still here 2 years on!

What place brings you the most joy?

If I could pick anywhere in the world, I would have to say my Grandad’s farm in Ireland. It’s in the absolute middle of nowhere so it’s really peaceful. The views from his house are amazing and it’s so cosy when it’s cold and rainy, which is most of the time. I love it there so much and wish I could visit more often.

What was your most memorable theatrical experience?

I was lucky enough to see Back to the Future on the West End in London last year and I still haven’t fully recovered. The special effects were unbelievable, the sets were amazing, and the DeLorean was a perfect replica of the one in the movie.

I don’t want to spoil what happens at the end of the show in case it comes to Melbourne, but I still haven’t worked out how they managed to do it. I will never forget that experience.

What is your favourite midnight snack?

This might be really boring, but hot buttered toast is unbeatable. There is nothing better in my opinion, especially with a cup of tea.

What is your dream show to work on?

If I could work on any show it would have to be Beetlejuice the Musical. I am obsessed with the production design of the original 1988 Beetlejuice film (that’s twice - mustn’t say it again); it’s so weird and creepy and I would love to be able to work on a set that replicated that.

When you are not at the theatre, where can you be found?

I am a major introvert, so I can usually be found alone. I spend a lot of my time designing, drawing, painting, baking or reading. I can also be found walking or running on the beach, eating frozen yogurt with my friends or, every second weekend, getting up in the middle of the night to watch a Grand Prix!
